The French Quarter
1883, the French began planning to rebuild the city. Based on the streets of Hanoi capital, the French architects built new road and construction works adapting to the local environment, created a style known today as architecture of the colony. The urban area was planned by the French including three areas: concessions, area for Vietnamese and area for French in the south of Hoan Kiem lake, now called French Quarter.
The Concessions shaped rectangle, bounded by the Bach Dang, Trang Tien, Le Thanh Tong, Nguyen Huy Tu, Tran Nhan Tong streets. It was the navy station, until 1875, the area was ceded to the French army to build barracks, residences and hospitals. The buildings here was built with black roof, corridors around. The mansion of Chief of the French Army, now is the Ministry of Defense guesthouse built from 1874 to 1877. The Lanessan Hospital, now is Military Hospital 108 and Friendship Hospital, which opened in 1893. The old city area( the area for Vietnamese) consists of Phan Dinh Phung, Hung Vuong, Hoang Dieu, Dien Bien Phu, Le Hong Phong, Chu Van An, Tran Phu streets. The roads here are wide, long and planted trees. The villas design was decorated by the architecture of northern France sophisticatedly, meticulously. A typical and important architecture work is the former Governor's Palace, now is the Presidential Palace, built from 1900 and 1902. The South area of Hoan Kiem Lake is a rectangle with two sides is dragon NLT page and Tran Hung Dao Trang Tien streets, Phan Boi Chau are the others andof Phan Chu Trinh. This area was built at the time with the old citadel area. An Important work of the city is located at Trang Tien Street is Hanoi Opera House, was built from 1902 to 1911, follows Opéra Garnier's Paris form.
French architecture is often seen as a heritage of Hanoi, but today has changed alots. The high buildings and the houses with imitated French style made the area become difficult to identify.
The flow of Hanoi’s history of 1000 years old, Hanoi Opera House proudly stands at the heart of central Hanoi as one of its most famous architectural, cultural and political symbol. Built by the French in 1901 - 1911 and renovated in the late 1990s.

The Viet Nam Military History Museum, set up on 17 July 1956, is one of seven national museums in Vietnam. It covers 12,800 m2. It is situated in central Hanoi, opposite the Lenin Park and near the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum.
